When the Durruti Column left Barcelona on July 24, 1936, the closet thing they had to a uniform was the blue coveralls (monos) common among the city's working class. I made a previous post highlighting my collection of miniature CNT-FAI militia in the first days of the Spanish Civil War, including the first days of the Durruti Column.
A few weeks into their campaign on the Aragon Front, however, the militants of the Durruti Column adopted an ascetic, if not a true uniform.
Most wore a mountain cap, and clothing of various shades of brown and khaki, similar to other forces of the "Popular Front" or "Republican" side, at the time.
Here, we see a bayonet charge of the Durruti Column against some Falangist militia.
To the right, we have some members of the Durruti Column's International Section, which included athletes in Barcelona for the Peoples' Olympics, planed to counter the one held in Nazi Germany. The Peoples Olympics was scheduled to happen the day of the coup, so many athletes join the militias. Other volunteers in this section were anarchists from European and Latin American countries, and they served as one of the D.C.'s "shock units," which conducted dangerous raids and night operations. I will highlight the Shock Forces in my next post.
